SOKOTO NEWMAP AT A GLANCE
The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is a World Bank assisted project in Nigeria to tackle the problems of Erosion and Degraded Watershed in the participating states in Nigeria.
The Project Development Objective PDO is to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-catchments. This eight-year multi-sectoral project will finance state interventions to prevent and reverse land degradation initially focussing on Gully Erosion sites that threaten infrastructure and livelihood activities of the people in the country.
The funding includes: a bank credit of USD $ 500 million a grant from The Global Environment Facility Trust Fund in the amount USD $ 3.96 million and a Grant from the special climate change fund in the amount of USD $ 4.63 million.

Gully erosion is another disturbing factor to the eastern and some parts of the city.
The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) aims to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-catchments. The project is designed to support the country’s transformation agenda to achieve greater environmental and economic security.
In Sokoto State, the project will impact positively towards addressing flood and gully erosion through development of good drainage systems, as well as developing climate change adaptation strategies to boost Agricultural activities and ensure food security and livelihood activities of the people of the state.
