Governor Yahaya Bello has commended the Federal Government and the World Bank for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) initiation in the State and called for immediate commencement of civil works implementation.

He said with the Project launch in Kogi state, his administration was signing up to the promise of NEWMAP strategy to combating erosion and that of providing sustainable safe environment to the people of Kogi State.

He commended the Federal Government for this initiative and applauded the progress of NEWMAP “evidently visible in the participating states”. This is why the state effected a timely release of a N100 million Naira Counterpart Fund to show commitment

Speaking at the Project Launch, National Project Coordinator NEWMAP, Salisu Dahiru, said solutions to erosion challenges in Kogi state has been sought with the states Partnership with NEWMAP.

Earlier, Dr. Amos Abu, Task Team Leader NEWMAP said “NEWMAP is a success because its approach is very different.  It is an integrated approach to sustainability of a safe environment of an entire watershed with alternative livelihood options.”

The event was witnessed by many stakeholders and members of the project teams from other participating states including school children and friends of the environment.
