KOGI NEWMAP AT A GLANCE

In the wake of the flood disaster of 2012, which devastated a lot of communities in Kogi State, coupled with Kogi State’s topography and the nature of the (loose) soil in the Eastern part of the State, which makes it susceptible to various forms of erosion, Kogi State [a northern State] requested to participate in the NEWMAP Project.
Upon fulfilling the criteria for participation, the State came on board in 2015. However, it (the Project) was formally launched by the State Governor, Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello on May 5, 2017. The Task Team Leader, Dr. Amos Abu represented the World Bank Country Director at the event, and other important dignitaries from far and near were equally in attendance.
The Project has since taken off in the State, and we are currently intervening in 8 Priority Sites + 3 Emergency Sites in the 1st phase of intervention.

The Chairperson, Kogi State NEWMAP State Technical Committee (STC) and Permanent Secretary,  Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MENR), Mrs Hannah Odiyo has called on consultants handling jobs in the State to always put in their best, taking cognizance of the huge amount of funds the State Government commits into such projects. She made the call during an INCEPTION MEETING on Catchment Management Plan (CMP) with Mecon Geological and Engineering Services (the Consulting Firm engaged for the Development of CMPs for some sites in the State), as well as the Kogi State NEWMAP SPMU. In his response, the Team Lead, MECON GEOLOGICAL and ENGIREERING SEVICES, said the team, as part of its assignment, would decipher the causes of erosion at the gully sites, and proffer a lasting solution to the menace… Kogi NEWMAP… Erosion Management Redefined…
