IMO NEWMAP AT A GLANCE
Imo State is one of the states in South East Nigeria, that is majorly faced with the challenge of combating gully erosion menace. The presence of these massive and expanding gully erosion sites across the State poses a huge threat to infrastructures and means of livelihood of the people. It’s impact in the state cannot be neglected with the loss of lives caused by gully, down to the displacement of community members from their lands and the economic struggle that the gully erosion menace continues to cause farmers who utilize the land for agricultural activities.
The Severity of this environmental degradation prompted the Nigerian government to seek urgent support in 2010 from the World Bank in a bid to tackle the challenge of gully erosion in seven mover states namely Imo, Abia, Anambara, Cross River, Ebonyi, Enugu and Edo. This resulted in the inclusion of Imo State as one of the seven mover states of the Project.
While the Project became effective on September 16, 2013; the Imo State government formally launched the NEWMAP project in the state on November 11, 2014. The Imo SPMU commenced with three initially approved sites which included Eziala- Obizi in Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA, Iyiuzo-Ihioma-Ogberuru in Orlu LGA and Umeshi-Amanto in Ideato South LGA. Other approved sites in the State include Umuturu -Ezemazu -Urualla in Ideato North LGA, Umunumo Ibeafor in Ehime Mbano LGA, Umueze Obazu-Mbieri gully erosion site in Mbaitoli LGA.
THE MISSION STATEMENT: To address on a multidimensional scale the gully erosion menace in Imo state. To also enlighten the populace on the natural and anthropogenic activities that degrades the natural environment and encourage environmental- friendly activities that reduce the loss of agricultural lands and infrastructures within the state.
