IMO NEWMAP SPMU has recently conducted a two-day Health & Safety sensitization programme for Urualla community. The sensitization which centred on ensuring prevention of occurrences of any form of Health & Safety hazards such as accidents at work sites, community members trespassing or walking into hazardous & accident prone areas, safe guarding of lives of the workers while working in the community & vice versa.
The Sensitization programme which was organized by the IMO NEWMAP Environmental & Safeguard Unit and kicked off by the State Project Co-ordinator Engr. Victor Anueyiagu, had in attendance Community liaison, the Community Association, members of the communities (Urualla & Osina), Management & Staff of Arab contractors, members of the SPMU.
Resource persons for the sensitization programme comprised of professional Health & Safety experts in the persons of (Dr. Dike Martins- State Coordinator Institute of Safety Profession, Engr. Henry C. UZoma-Training Manager Institute of Safety Profession (Dr. Chinedu Ihejirika Dept. of Environmental Management FUTO).
The resource persons provided and reinforced unambiguous health and safety guidelines for compliance by the contractors and their workers on site, the workers were further reminded to ensure that their social activities within the community did not become a source of concern to the community by engaging in vices that can erode peaceful co-existence with the community. Community members were also charged to ensure adherence to signs placed at the gully construction sites, they were also encouraged to promote peace during the period of the intervention in their community.
