ENUGU NEWMAP AT A GLANCE
Enugu NEWMAP mission statement: “Restoring the landscape of degraded area and improving social livelihood in targeted sub-catchments”.
Brief History of the Project in the State: The Project became effective in September 16, 2013 under the Ministry of Environment as its authorizing agency. Enugu NEWMAP was among the five mover states.
Initially, Enugu NEWMAP has five priority sites out of which Ninth mile and Ajali sites have been completed.
The choice of these two sites was the fact that both erosion sites are along the same axis and posed severe threat to the water pipeline and twin tanks water reservoir supplying portable water to Enugu metropolis from Ajali water scheme.
Enugu NEWMAP has four ongoing gully erosion sites, namely, Enugu Ngwo, Agbaja Ngwo, Udi Ozalla, and Umuavulu-Abor.
Also, the following sites were cleared for civil works, Anyazuru Ohom Orba, Onuiyi-Alo-Ulo, Imilike-Etiti, Obolla-Afor- Obollo Eke erosion sites in our 2020 Procurement Plan.
Enugu NEWMAP support vulnerable communities with grants to engage in their choice livelihood activities, hence 29 Community Interest Groups were formed and empowered using NEWMAP Needs Assessment Studies in Ameke Ngwo, and Nsude communities.
345 Project Affected Persons have been compensated in Enugu Ngwo, Agbaja Ngwo, and Umuavulu Abor respectively.
The Project is currently under the leadership of Barr. Vincent Egechukwu Obetta as the State Project Coordinator.
