EKITI NEWMAP AT A GLANCE

MISSION STATEMENT
To improve erosion and gully management, rehabilitation of degraded lands, reduction of long-term erosion vulnerability of roads, houses, markets etc in the State; for enhanced sustainability of livelihood activities evident by increased incomes for rural households from improved agricultural forest practices.

VISION
To enhance greater environmental and economic security through positive environmental behavior and livelihood enhancement activities for sustainable development.

HISTORY OF THE PROJECT IN EKITI STATE
Consequent upon the inclusion of Ekiti State in NEWMAP in July, 2019, the Unit has been able to accomplish the following:
Composition of the State Steering Committee headed by the State Commissioner for Environment and the State Technical Committee, headed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment; the Committees have since been meeting as appropriate;
The World Bank has given its “No Objection” for the engagement of a considerable number of the proposed personnel of the Project Management Unit (PMU) for the State. The only outstanding ones are those of the Communication Officer, Project Auditor and Natural Resources Officer whose ‘No Objection’ from the World Bank is being awaited. The certificates and letters of deployment of the cleared personnel had been forwarded to the World Bank as requested.

A Task Force from NEWMAP headquarters visited the State to assess the preparedness of the State for the project;
Members of the PMU visited the Ondo State NEWMAP on observation tour;
Necessary accounts have been opened and the State Government had paid the sum of N20million into the GCC Account as a proof of its commitment. Meanwhile the release of the first tranche of the IDA fund is being awaited;
Offices to accommodate the project have been adequately provided and equipment are being procured;
Six Projects have been approved for the first phase of intervention. However, the approval of the Workplan and Procurement Plan is being awaited.
