DELTA NEWMAP AT A GLANCE
Delta NEWMAP came into being on May 7th, 2016 following the engagement and constitution of members of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) by the State Government and the World Bank in conjunction with the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) of NEWMAP Nigeria.
This was followed by preparatory arrangement that led to the official launched of the project by His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, the Executive Governor of Delta State, on September 7th, 2017 at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba.
Interestingly, the state government has demonstrated great commitment to the project realizing the enormous benefits in partnering with donor agencies in the payment of its counterpart fund to the tune of N530m, being a mandatory criterion for project implementation. There is gain saying that the State Project Management Unit has a highly productive workforce; most of whom were drawn from line ministries/agencies, while few from the private sector.
At the moment, the state government has engaged a world class design and supervision firm, Aurecon Consulting Engineers Nig. Ltd., currently supervising the first civil works contract under Delta NEWMAP, that is Midoma/Iwerebor gully erosion control reclamation works in Owanta, Ika North East Local Government Area, Delta State.
Apart from the Midoma/Iwerebor reclamation contract that was signed between Delta State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) on behalf of the state government and Levant Construction Company Limited in Asaba, in 15th January, 2020, the consultancy works for the other four erosion/flood Intervention sites in Obomkpa, Ukwu-Uzu, Ubulu-Uku and Jesse are in advanced stage for civil works award.
