The Government of Borno State during the administration of Governor Kashim Shettima worried by desertification, land degradation and desert encroachment among others and having been briefed on the developmental Objectives of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, the Government immediately swung into action by committing the sum of N1billion in March 2017,to signify its commitment to the immediate take-off of the project in Borno State.
Land degradation and gully erosion are major environmental problems facing Nigerian States of which Borno State is not an exception. Erosion and land degradation threaten both rural and urban infrastructure, properties, lives and livelihoods with adverse effects on economic as well as physical growth of both towns and local governments.
Among the areas affected by gully erosion is River Ngaddabul, River Ngadda and Gwoza local government just to mention a few. While land degradation has adversely affected areas such as Ngamdu (Kaga LGA), Magumeri (Magumeri LGA), konduga (Konduga LGA) and Uvu (Askira LGA) etc. The River Ngaddabul annual floods also contribute towards gullying processes by developing the channels, leading to the initiation of new gullies on the slopes.
