One of the Project’s focus is to contribute to activities on resilience to climate related challenges in the country and this has been specifically outlined under Component 3. Under this Component: Climate Change Response, the intention is to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to promote low carbon, climate-resilient development to help put in place conditions for reducing in the longer-term climate-related challenges (including erosion).

It was in line with this thought that NEWMAP recently procured over 4,000 fuel efficient cook stoves for households and institutions in the rural communities of the project affected areas in the first mover states. This is part of the multifaceted efforts by NEWMAP to reducing Land degradation by controlling deforestation; promote low carbon development option leading to energy efficiency.

This move will encourage the targeted rural dwellers to adopt the use of clean and efficient cook stoves thus relieving pressures on local forest resources which in turn will reduce gully erosion and future impacts of climate change. The added advantage is the clean air and short cooking time for the beneficiaries.
